| With roots stretching back to before Confederation, London was the first place in the world where Canada established a diplomatic presence – informally in 1869 (only two years after our “dominion” was created), and then officially in 1880. The early representatives of the Government of Canada in the UK worked from their homes or in various small office locations, typically along Victoria Street. But in the 1920s – as an indication of Canada’s growing, independent stature in the world and as a symbol of our long and rich relationship with the United Kingdom – we acquired some remarkable real estate for a diplomatic mission on the west side of Trafalgar Square between Cockspur Street and Pall Mall. After renovations, it was opened by King George V and Queen Mary as the new High Commission of Canada on June 29th, 1925. As this New Year unfolds, we are planning a number of activities to mark this anniversary, as we celebrate our excellent working relationship with the UK, and highlight both the vast heritage and the vital democratic values that we share. Stay tuned – we’ll reach out to our Canadian friends in the UK throughout this year of celebrations. In 2025, Canada will also have the honour of chairing the G7. Working in close partnership with one another, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Germany, Italy and Japan have made enormous contributions to global economic well-being, as well as world peace and security. This year’s G7 encounters will take place in a difficult international context with wars in Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa, food and energy insecurity, the ongoing prospect of large-scale human migration, the impacts of powerful new technologies, the existential threat of climate change, sluggish economies, the spectre of foreign interference intended to undermine democracy, and the grievances of lesser developed economies about a “world order” that does not meet their needs. Canada will be working diligently with trusted partners like the UK to help the G7 navigate these troubled waters. 2025 begins on a great cultural note for Canada. Our world-renowned Cirque du Soleil is once again headlining for several weeks at Royal Albert Hall (January to March). Representing Canada in the United Kingdom is a tremendously rewarding experience. Our team from Canada House is always grateful for the warm and generous way in which we are received. We are also anxious to stay in touch with all Canadian friends and colleagues in the UK. Let us know what you are doing and how you are doing in all your activities in Britain, and please reach out to the High Commission if you need our assistance. Best regards, |
