As part of this year’s Edinburgh International Festival, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, conducted by Rafael Payare, presents a programme that places Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben in dialogue with contemporary perspectives on identity, history and the natural world. Indigenous Canadian sopranos Emma Pennell and Elisabeth St-Gelais perform powerful new works exploring the experiences and memories of Indigenous communities in Canada, while Gabriela Ortiz’s cello concerto Dzonot, performed by Alisa Weilerstein, evokes the landscapes and ecosystems of Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula and highlights environmental concerns. Together, these works offer fresh ways of engaging with Strauss’s celebrated masterpiece.
In an exclusive to Culture Canada readers the Edinburgh International festival is offering purchasers to up to 2 tickets at 50% off with promo code CANADA26
