Women Over 50 Film Festival

Online and at Depot Cinema, Lewes, East Sussex

From: September 5th 2025
to: October 6th 2025

The Women Over 50 Film Festival (WOFFF) is a UK-based international short film festival that celebrates older women on both sides of the camera. Now in its 11th year, WOFFF champions work by or about women over 50, addressing ageism and amplifying under represented voices in film. This year’s programme includes a standout selection of six Canadian films including:

EMPTY PAGES | DIR. KAREN KAEJA

Set in Iceland’s frozen landscapes, this haunting dance film explores the presence and absence of touch through the lens of everyday plastic and its impact. Karen Kaeja is an award-winning Canadian choreographer and performer. Co-Artistic Director of Kaeja d’Dance, her internationally acclaimed work centres on touch, body memory, and environmental themes.

PASSAGEWAYS | DIRS. GENEVIÈVE TREMBLAY AND MILLA CUMMINGS

This stop motion documentary explores menopause through humour, honesty, and shifting perspectives —from fears of ageing to the celebration of “the end of the eggs.” Geneviève Tremblay and Milla Cummings are Canadiana nimators whose work blends theatrical storytelling with experimental techniques. Both studied at Laval University and present Passageways as a Student Film.

QUEEN MOTHER | DIR. KING LOUIE PALOMO

During a quiet visit before a drag performance, Dolores and her son Isaac share memories and long-held secrets, confronting the silence and sacrifices that shaped their relationship. King Louie is a queer Filipino-Canadian filmmaker and producer, his latest film (Queen Mother) was developed during his residency at the Canadian Film Center.

SOMBER TIDES | DIR. CHANTAL CARON

Set against the icy backdrop of the St. Lawrence River, two creatures battle for survival in a haunting dance that echoes the final cry of a vanishing species. Chantal Caron is a choreographer and filmmaker known for her nature-inspired work. A member of the Order of Canada, their award-winning films blend environmental themes with contemporary dance.

THE ARCHITECT OF THE LIMINAL | DIR. DEB EITHER

A surreal, offbeat micro-short following an artist’s search for meaning, blending Super 8 footage with animation and silent film aesthetics. Deb Ethier is a Canadian filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist whose micro-shorts span wry comedies to surreal experiments — all made on a shoestring budget under her Rusty Bolt Theatre banner.
