Did you know that it is World Refugee Day on June 20th and that Canada is a global leader in the resettlement of refugee from overseas?
In 2019, Canada plans to welcome 29,950 resettled refugees from around the world, and is working to expand protection globally through the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative. The High Commission works closely with the UK Home Office and UK partners, including Reset UK and Sponsor Refugee to support the UK’s Community Sponsorship scheme.
Canada has worked closely with the UNHCR’s United Nations Refugee Agency for decades to resettle refugees fleeing war and persecution all over the world, from 37,000 Hungarians in the 1950s to 60,000 Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotians in 1979-80 and recently 62,000 refugees from Syria since 2015.
The resettlement of families fleeing war and persecution has been critical to building the Canada we have today. Integration of refugees into the Canadian community is done in partnership between federal, provincial, and municipal governments as well as local organizations across the country. For many, the challenges of starting a new life in a new country are significant.
